Initiative Signed by Lunghwa University and Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy to Promote Sustainable Development Together

Nov 21 2023

To implement sustainable development and fulfill universities' social responsibility and influence, the Initiative for Sustainable Development of Universities was jointly signed by Lunghwa University of Science and Technology and Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy on November 9, 2023, working together to strive for sustainable development. Afterward, Chairman Eugene Chien of the Institute delivered a speech, sharing knowledge and sustainable development-related issues with teachers to achieve consensus and practice sustainable development through communication.

During his speech, President Tzu-Hsiang Ko expressed that the issue of carbon emissions has been highly valued worldwide in recent years. Lunghwa University of Science and Technology actively constructs environmental sustainability goals. To enable students to delve deeper into related issues, the university has offered courses on carbon emissions and carbon capture in the College of Management and the College of Engineering, integrating sustainable concepts into teaching and research.

In addition, the Center for University Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development was established at Lunghwa this year. It trained nearly 100 seed teachers in sustainable development and carbon inventory. Based on the needs of companies in the neighboring industrial parks, the center provides various customized counseling services. The College of Engineering assists companies in building carbon-reduction capabilities and technologies. The College of Management guides companies in establishing management systems for carbon emissions and publishing corporate sustainability reports. The College of Humanities and Design assists the region in establishing sustainable development and local regeneration characteristics, promoting industrial technologies with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, and implementing university social responsibility.

Executive Vice President Ru-Jen Lin pointed out that Lunghwa University of Science and Technology has been actively moving towards sustainable development. Three conferences on related topics have been recently held. This time, Chairman Eugene Chien was invited to give a speech, allowing the university's teachers to have a deeper understanding of the issues and integrate them into teaching and research. The hope is that the sustainable talents nurtured by the university can contribute to the industry.

Later, Chairman Eugene Chien gave a speech on the topic of Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Universities. He elaborated on two main themes: The Dramatic Era of 2015-2050 and Trends in Sustainable Development in Universities. Eugene Chien mentioned that in 2050, the world will undergo a complete transformation, with significant changes in human lifestyles, production methods, and business models. He emphasized that universities should focus on three aspects: university governance, environmental sustainability, and social prosperity. Sustainable development should be integrated into institutional decision-making and development planning. The concept and policies of environmental sustainability should be implemented on campus. As for social prosperity, it is necessary to cultivate talents related to sustainable development and career development plans, continuously enhance education on sustainable development in universities, and extend sustainability from corporations to universities. Combining corporate networks and university knowledge research, Taiwan can create a sustainable future.
