The Award-Winning Creations by Department of Cultural Creativity and Design Shine at World Hakka Expo

Sep 19 2023

To foster young talent in the cultural and creative industries and promote Hakka imagery in product design, the Youth Affairs Bureau of the Taoyuan City Government organized the Taoyuan Youth Career Dreamer Competition in response to the 2023 World Hakka Expo. Students from the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology secured second place in the student category with their exceptional work, “Hakka Fun.”

Inspired by Hakka elements, the competition attracted nearly 40 groups of young professionals and student creatives from diverse fields. Through preliminary selections and workshops, participants crafted cultural products with Hakka artistic imagery. The top three outstanding cultural and innovative products in the youth and student categories, along with commendable works, were showcased at the World Hakka Expo, highlighting the participants’ rich and ingenious creativity.

The award-winning “Hakka Fun,” developed by students from Lunghwa University, serves as an experiential teaching tool for Hakka dyeing. Utilizing waste materials like coffee grounds and turmeric to produce natural dyes, the kit allows users to create unique Hakka fabrics. Furthermore, the experiential kit can be repurposed into decorative lighting, embodying both environmental protection and aesthetic values.

This project, an extension of their initial design, underwent multiple modifications and testing to achieve optimal results. The students were thrilled to receive recognition from the judges, securing the second prize in the student category and earning a coveted spot in the Hakka Party exhibition area at the 2023 World Hakka Expo—an invaluable experience.
The advisor highlighted the students’ dedication to continuous improvement, emphasizing their ability to fully demonstrate professional product design skills learned during their four years at the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design. Winning the grand prize underscored the effectiveness of the department’s systematic curriculum in inspiring creative thinking and practical application.

Emphasizing that design competitions are a comprehensive demonstration of abilities, the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design stressed the importance of good conception and the use of appropriate tools in completing designs. The award-winning achievements of Yuting Xiao and Jiaqi Wu significantly affirm both the department’s teaching methods and the students’ learning outcomes. The department remains committed to encouraging students to participate in competitions, accumulate valuable experience, integrate theory with practice, and seamlessly connect with the industry. This approach ensures that graduates from Lunghwa can enter the workforce immediately, emerging as outstanding talents in design and creativity.
