Semiconductor Industry Trend Prospect Forum at Lunghwa Discussing Industrial Development and Talent Cultivation

May 23 2023

In response to the booming development of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, the rapid growth of sectors such as AI, 5G, IoT, automotive, and high-performance components will continue to drive Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Domestic semiconductor manufacturers have experienced a significant demand for talent in recent years.

On May 22, 2023, the Department of Semiconductor Engineering at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology hosted a special Forum on Semiconductor Industry Trends and Talent Development. Distinguished scholars and experts from National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-sen University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and National Applied Research Laboratories were invited to share insights into new semiconductor technologies and applications. They also discussed the future direction of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the cultivation of professional talents.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Tzu-Hsiang Ko, the President of Lunghwa University of Science and Technology, highlighted that the Department of Semiconductor Engineering is currently the only department approved by the Ministry of Education among private universities of science and technology in Taiwan. This year, it will commence student recruitment to nurture talents required by the domestic industry, enhancing students’ professional skills in the semiconductor field and guiding them toward a world-class semiconductor industry career. Lunghwa University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with many leading domestic semiconductor companies such as TSMC, ASE, Sigurd, Eris, YeaShin, Win, Amkor, Actron, Nanya, iST, and other partners, has established a semiconductor industry-university alliance, providing senior students with valuable internship opportunities.

Furthermore, to meet the practical teaching needs of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering, Lunghwa University of Science and Technology invested ten million dollars last year to complete two semiconductor teaching facilities. These include the semiconductor component manufacturing center for the front-end yellow light lithography process and the back-end packaging and testing industry environment. Mass production equipment is provided for students to operate and practice. This department stands as the only one in Taiwan offering teaching and practical courses for both upstream and downstream processes.

The aim is to create easily comprehensible teaching content and curriculum designs that reinforce hands-on experience, ensuring students absorb professional knowledge effectively. Additionally, the department plans to offer career programs based on industry demands, develop teaching materials in collaboration with the industry, and invite practitioners for collaborative teaching. This approach will align the department's professional courses more closely with industry needs. The expectation is that, after rigorous training at Lunghwa, students will emerge as excellent professionals in the semiconductor industry.
