May 17 2023

The results of the final round of the 2023 National Competition for Technical College Students' Practical Projects have been announced. Lunghwa University of Science and Technology has a total of 5 entries on the shortlist. In the category of Healthcare and Childcare, the team of Li-Chen Ko from the Department of Tourism and Leisure claimed the first-place position with their project "Getting Active in Bowling — Portable and Detachable Realistic Bowling Ball Device." Additionally, the team of Jia-Li Chen and Wei-Zhong Lin from the Department of Information Management achieved an impressive third place in the Management category with their project "No (Strike) Silver, No (Win) Bronze — Interactive Golf Croquet System." Furthermore, the project "Visualization Design of Building Evacuation Route Guidance," developed by the team of Jian-Zhi Lin and Bi-Fen Huang from the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design, received a commendation in the Civil Engineering category for their outstanding performance.

The competition of students' practical project production is one of the crucial nationwide benchmark competitions for technical college students before graduation. Students utilize their acquired professional knowledge and creativity gained from daily life observations. Their projects are increasingly gaining recognition from the industry and have the potential for commercialization.

Dr. Li-Chen Ko mentioned that this creation, "Getting Active in Bowling — Portable and Detachable Realistic Bowling Ball Device," has obtained a teaching practice research program grant from the Ministry of Education, which involves planning diverse physical education courses on campus. It has also received opportunities for industry-academia collaboration from manufacturers to conduct promotional activities. In addition to obtaining a patent, this creative product has also been scheduled for technology transfer by the manufacturer.

The team of Jia-Li Chen and Wei-Zhong Lin from the Department of Information Management won third place in the Management category with their project "No (Strike) Silver, No (Win) Bronze — Interactive Golf Croquet System." The system includes an intelligent scoring system, intelligent mallets, robots, and an App design, which smartify the game of golf croquet. The intelligent mallets analyze the swing's force, direction, and speed, while the robots interact with the elderly. Through the App, enthusiasts can invite each other to compete, adding motivation and making it more convenient for the public to experience the joy of golf croquet.

The project "Visualization Design of Building Evacuation Route Guidance" by Jian-Zhi Lin and Bi-Fen Huang, a team of teachers and students from the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design, received a commendation in the Civil Engineering category. Based on the existing emergency exit sign providing emergency lighting and route guidance, the design incorporates a "fluorescent agent" feature. This allows individuals to leave fluorescent footprints during evacuation, enabling rescue teams to locate survivors based on the traces left behind. The traditional appearance of the emergency exit signs has also been improved to provide more intuitive visual guidance. Adding the "fluorescent agent" does not significantly change the size compared with the original design. However, it adds a new function that can shorten rescue time and effectively improve the chances of survival.

President Tzu-Hsiang Ko stressed that the university encourages students to conduct industry-competitive research. Participating in national practical project competitions for technical students can enhance students' thinking and practical abilities, cultivating practical and industry-oriented talents. It is hoped that faculty and student teams will pursue practical project research and strive for more opportunities for industry-academic cooperation to demonstrate that technical students can shine on the world stage through practical performance.
