Lunghwa and Industry-Academia Partner Win German iF Design Award

Mar 18 2024

The faculty and students of the College of Humanities and Design at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology collaborated with Junliang Chen, the founder of Freeimage Design, to design and curate the Chiayi Tea Culture Exhibition. The “High Mountain Tea Capital, Chiayi – Tea & Fashion” exhibition was organized by the Chiayi County Government to promote tea culture and industry. The centerpiece of their creation is the “Tea & Fashion” theme building, which inherits the refinement of tea art and innovates the fashion landscape of tea culture with precision. This positions it as a forward-looking indicator of Oriental aesthetics and the tea industry in Taiwan. Their outstanding performance was highly recognized with the 2024 German iF Design Award for Interior Design for Cultural Exhibitions.

The iF Design Award, with a history of 70 years, is one of three major design awards worldwide. This year, there were 10,800 entries from 72 countries, showcasing the influence of design on a global scale. The number of entries increases yearly, and only the highest quality works stand out.

The College of Humanities and Design at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology, aiming to strengthen the cooperation between the school and the industry, established a long-term strategic partnership with the renowned Freeimage Design Company. Led by Dean Moli Ye and Associate Professor Chien-Chih Ni from the Department of Cultural Creativity and Digital Media Design, in collaboration with the founder of Freeimage Design, Junliang Chen, they led the faculty and student team in designing and curating the Chiayi Tea Culture Exhibition.

Associate Professor Chien-Chih Ni, the project leader, stated that the team continues participating in the Chiayi Tea Culture Exhibition design led by Master Junliang Chen, aiming to enhance the practical connection with the industry through close collaboration. The award-winning category for this project is “Interior Design: Cultural Exhibition,” the winning work is titled “Tea & Trends,” which combines the ancient and modern to create a contemporary yet classical penetrating spatial environment.

People immersed in the award-winning work — the glass tea house for tea tasting and appreciating antiquity — can imagine holding a cup of good tea, sitting at a gathering of literati, enjoying the vastness of the riverside and the tea & fashion marsh, and appreciating the distant magpies and the Huashan scenery. The design team’s innovative creation, the “Tea Cup Lamp,” made from 280 tea cups, reflects the stability of the four aspects of sky, earth, people, and tea. In contrast, the selection of tea leaves, the matching of clothing, and the attention to tea sets all symbolize cultural heritage and the new fashion trend. Winning the iF Design Award represents that the work has passed the rigorous scrutiny of top design experts globally, which is not easy.

Dean Moli Ye of the College of Humanities and Design pointed out that participating in international design competitions can enhance students’ thinking ability and global perspective. It is a comprehensive display of abilities that requires good concepts and complete design output through appropriate tools. In recent years, under the free, lively, and open learning atmosphere, the Program for Navigating Excellence in Multimedia Technology and the Department of Cultural Creativity at the College of Humanities and Design has achieved great success, fully demonstrating the rich and innovative design energy of Lunghwa faculty and students, and proving that Taiwan can hold an essential position in the design world.
