From Marine Wastes to Treasures: Lunghwa USR Project Exhibition Promoting Environmental Sustainability Concepts

Feb 20 2024

Based on Lunghwa’s USR Sustainable Development Project on Stone Weir Culture in Xinwu, a 9-day exhibition themed “From Marine Wastes to Treasures” was recently held at Dadaocheng. The exhibition showcased nearly a hundred creative works by students in their courses, focusing on “Stone Weir Culture” and “Circular Sustainability.” Collaborative partners such as the Xinwu Stone Weir Story Museum, the Xinwu District Love Hometown Association, and the No Landfill organization participated in the exhibition and promotion, attracting many visitors and receiving widespread acclaim.

The Sustainable Development Project focuses on two main pillars: “Stone Weir Culture” and “Environmental Sustainability.” By organizing stone fishing weir experiential activities to boost local visibility and engage students in the field, integrating the university’s professional courses to develop unique local products, and utilizing in-depth interviews and video documentation to document and promote aspects of Stone Weir culture. Regarding environmental sustainability, beach cleaning actions and environmental education are encouraged to advocate for marine sustainability concepts. Practical actions such as plastic recycling and experiential courses are implemented. Over the past six months, the project has launched 15 sustainable experiential courses, receiving enthusiastic support from the local community and positive feedback from the public.

Assistant Professor Nian-An Lin, the project leader from the Department of Cultural Creativity, emphasized that this exhibition not only showcases Lunghwa University’s professional practical courses but also provides students with opportunities to engage in hands-on field activities. Through these experiences, students can apply their professional skills to address local challenges, create value for the community, design related products, and gain early exposure to societal needs. This initiative allows students to accumulate relevant experiences while fulfilling the university’s social responsibility.

The exhibition also hosted various experiential activities, such as using a capsule toy machine to create keychains of sea turtles, dolphins, and starfish made from recycled plastic bottle caps or experiencing the creation of colorful artwork using trendy bottle caps. These activities enhanced public understanding of circular sustainability and demonstrated how waste generated in daily life could be transformed into something extraordinary.
