In today’s diverse society and workplaces, English is becoming increasingly important. To enable high school students to learn practical English for the workplace and experience its widespread use, the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology organized a one-day English camp on January 25, 2024. It attracted 45 students and teachers from Municipal Hai-Shan High School in New Taipei City and Chi-Ying Senior High School in Taoyuan City to participate. Through this camp, students were encouraged to master English to gain a language advantage in the future workplace and expand their job opportunities.

The one-day English camp activities consisted of both classroom sessions and workplace experiences. The classroom sessions took place at Lunghwa University and were led by the Department of Applied Foreign Languages faculty. Through various activities, students understood their vocational characteristics, followed by sessions where they could identify roles and positions suitable for themselves in the workplace based on their traits. In the cheerful atmosphere of the camp, high school students not only learned English relevant to the workplace but also gained a deeper understanding of their characteristics and suitable occupations.

The workplace experience activities took place at the Ever-Rich flagship store in Neihu. These activities allowed students to understand the importance of hospitality and appearance in the service industry and allowed them to design outfits for customers and experience sales work firsthand. During the afternoon activities, students gained a deeper understanding of the company and learned about the nature of work in the sales industry, including luxury goods, fashion, and cosmetics. They also encountered tourists from abroad, experiencing firsthand the importance of language skills in international companies.

Hsiao-Hui Hsu, the Chair of the Applied Foreign Languages Department, who organized the camp, stated that the department’s goal is to cultivate students’ ability to use English effectively in various workplaces. The department provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills, supplemented by professional English and foreign language training, laying a solid foundation for students in business and tourism communication and providing them with more opportunities for foreign language application. In addition, the department has established partnerships with hundreds of companies for off-campus internships. It actively promotes overseas internships, allowing students to develop excellent competitiveness and employability during their time at the university, thus smoothly transitioning into the workplace in the future.
